monday night lights

Ryan helped light up Katie's(?) group pic.

Nice ride last night, cool temps, no wind, full moon, conversation. First lap clockwise required more pedaling. Riding up southhill descent berms, cut, and camelbacks were challenging. Add in the night perspective and it was not the familiar, nonthinking, comfortable counterclockwise ride. Then rode the north half counterclockwise to bring back the familiar trail and maximize the coasting. A couple of us stopped for refreshments at Paul's.

On the way home down Fort St about 20:30, I had a small suv pull up along side and yell "on your left --- get a car". I didn't have time for a response but as I kept pedaling I thought, it's sad he doesn't understand how fun (liberating, invigorating, dare I say spiritual) riding a bike is. Some people think you have to use a car or you're missing something. Of course they're the ones missing something by not riding a bike. 8-)

Started rereading "The Art of Urban Cycling" by Robert Hurst. This book helped prepare me for commuting more than anyother.

Concerning the "on your left -- get a car", I found this quote of Art Buchwald from 1968 on page 35:

Americans are broad-minded people. They'll accept the fact that a person can be an alcoholic, a dope fiend, a wife beater, and even a newspaperman, but if a man doesn't drive there's something wrong with him.

Many (most?) car drivers think there is something (mentally)wrong with the person who uses a bike rather than a car for transportation.
