View from the hill

As I sat up on the hill saturday, the view almost took my breath away.
The parking lot looked to have 40 cars in it.The road leading to it, and the road going west were lined with cars.
The turn out coupled with one of the best atmospheres I can remember at a race, stayed with me this weekend.
You could see that people put their hearts into trail prep and the general plan.

I am proud to have played a part in it. I am very proud of the people that put so much more in to this race.

Forgot to post the part where my God Son and his friend ran up to me showing me there medals.
As long as I race, That will be the best race moment.

It was a great event. Props to everyone that made a huge effort to pull it together.

I had a great time before, during, and after the race. The best part for me was getting to ride almost two laps with a friend during the race.

My favorite part was seeing Donna racing after she told me she wasn't going to so she could help with registration (which she did also).

Oh and seeing a half dozen first timers raise their hands when asked if it was their first race. That rocked!

Team Green, once again, ya done good. Anybody know the count?

Also, everyone send good vibes to Aaron. He took a nasty fall and left some offerings to the trail gods.

Yes, Great job by everyone who helped!! BMCC is blessed giving volunteers who work hard to put on a quality event - thank you all.

Course prep and marking, setup/teardown, registration, scoring team, course marshals, food tent, prompt results - I'm very happy with the race production!

The two things out of our hands - weather and rider turnout were both phenominal!

We had 162. Great turnout and fun for 18 kids in the under 10 race. Fortunately, their complete finishing list was found in the bottom of a folder Saturday night and included in the results. And the 18 Juniors were cool to see as well. The biggest cat/class goes to the Beginner 35+ with 17.

I think the 3hr race brought in some racers that would not have raced. 15 raced that option. I didn't see any problems running it concurrently with the Jr/Beg and Sp/Ex races. John commented on how it was cool moving in and out of the different xc races during the 3hr.

Great to see the number of riders from outside the Omaha/CB, Lincoln area.

Definitely need a new, fully stocked 1st aid kit. I talked with Aaron tonight, no damage to knee function, and the jagged cut sewed back together well.

Have a call into Lynden's voicemail to see how her thigh is feeling. Heard later at the race that she had stitches and was doing ok.

Connor's elbow didn't end up being serious, thankfully.

An August race was not my first choice but it worked out really well temperature wise, just like the first race in 06, even though it was postponed a week b/c of snow. 07 was a deep freeze and still racers came out. Pattern would indicate an 09 Aug race will be in the 90s for temp and humidity. 8-)

Finally, I really liked the start/finish area with shade trees and parking lot. Many people sat along the treeline and watched the race on the prairie hill and flats. Had some problems keeping people off the trail though. Putting down the yellow tape to the finish line helped a lot. Then it was just announcing "rider-up" on the PA so people knew when not to cross the trail.

Notes for next year:
- 175 hot dogs are enough, not 200.
- four barrels of water are not enough.
- with many riders taking cell phones, need to give out the race director's number for an emergency on the trail.

gosh that sounds like a whole lot of fun! great volunteerism, fun trails, and good competition all coming together. I am jealous. I am seriously ready for some good riding when I get back home.

Good to hear from you rf. We missed your presence at the race, but your work is helping a difficult situation. You will have some reverse culture shock the first couple days you get back.

Did you buy a rattlecan bike and ride around the area just to get your spin on?

Seriously, can bikes help solve problems and contribute to normalcy?

Talked to Lynden, she is starting her doctorate today and is limping around campus. No stiches because there was no skin to stretch across the gouge. Irrigated, xrayed for debree, bandaged, antibiotics, and otc pain meds.

This was Lynden's first race and she is a trooper! She still wants to race mtb again. She heard someone behind her and looked back. I crashed into a tree after looking back too during a race. Some lessons learned are more painful than others.

Hope everyone is healing up ok. I think this was the best race yet. thanks to everyone that helped out.

Glad to see that Lynden is feeling okay, and I trust Aaron is recovering as well.

No rattlecan bike yet. I wouldn't be able to ride very far. I am pretty well boxed in here with checkpoints all over the place. I have been able to run 2-5mi a day on treadmill, and am lifting weights.

Looking forward to some gravel road rides with the team in december!
