Cranksgiving thank you

Hey all -- thanks for sharing your Saturday with us. It was a ton of fun which netted nearly a half-ton of goods. Well, sort of -- we had 770 pounds, which is awesome.

I'll post some pics soon. But what I'm most interested in are the routes people used -- how'd you do it, and where did you go?

edit by dale: check out the pics on http://www.cranksgiving-omaha.blogspot.com/

Also, seems a few of us were interviewed and quoted in a nice article (Cyclists crank it up to help hungry) on page 6B of the Sunday Omaha World Herald.

Bob with son, Tim, Jeff from Harlan, and I headed west on Fort St all the way to 168th, then south to Wallymart. Tim and I got TP. We were one of the last to leave BM and yet beat Ryan, Roxy, and Martin who hammered the neighborhood curves and hills instead.

We picked up a young roadie, sorry don't remember his name but he broke his collar bone this year. We then went across the parking lot to Sallies for shampoo. Did some urban riding across curbs, grass and ditch down Maple and through the ditch to the 66 gas station. I think we got soup there. Then across curbs to Target for something.

Three gals were keeping pace with us from Wallymart but then opened up a gap to the 156th HyVee. We then went to the HyVee gas station, down Maple to 148th and another Fantasy station for spagetti o's. Through the home depot lot, 20 grand, and an apartment complex to Bakers where Tim and I picked two turkeys besides flour. Then across 132nd to Walgreen for PB and on to Target for sugar.

The six of us stayed together as a group. Tim and I alternated going in to buy while the other stayed outside and watched the bike and occassionally Bob's son.

We had fun and I got to use my bob trailer for shopping which was one of the main reasons I justified buying it in the first place.

Thanks, Brian and your support crew, for organizing this and providing food, trophies, and getting swag.

Oh, and getting to ride a lap at Tranquility with locals and outoftowners was great dessert.

Nice write up in the Sunday OWH.

Just wanted to add my thanks to Bryan and the entire CranksGiving support crew. Benjamin and I had a blast. The soup and Sloppy Joes were awesome. Ben and I want the recipe for that soup that was up by the front door.

Ben said he wants to buy even heavier stuff next year. He said that 41lbs didn't seem like much of a burdan at all. I think I'll get him off his training wheels before then and he can peddle while I sit in the trailer. ;-)

Memorable moments:

-Watching the competative folks race to their bikes

-The conversations we had with checkout folks, explaining what we are doing

-Daddy...I have to go potty

-Creative path finding even while pulling a trailer

-Seeing other rides going different directions along the way

-Daddy...I have to go potty again

-40 pounds of sugar

-Seeing the mountain of food at the shop

-Good eats

-Daddy... I've got to go real bad

-and last but not least CHEESECAKE... YARG!

I'll try to post some pictures on my blog later this week.

I didn't even think about the beauty supply store for shampoo. Good call. It was probably pretty helpful to have the widened Fort Street available, too.

I think for next year I want to have a couple of people out driving around with cameras -- I'd love to see the craziness of lots of bikes darting around.

Bob -- I'll email you the recipe. It's really quite easy.

Thanks for the compliments, but you guys made it go. Without a good turnout -- and heavy-duty towing capacity -- it wouldn't have been near as much fun. Oh, and the number is updated thanks to the Food Bank's official scale -- 820 pounds. Score!

Wow... 820 pounds.

I'll have to see if I can attach a flatbed to my bike next year. ;-)
